Alex Gauer is a Watertown High School graduate from the class of 2017 and a former Post 17 standout (2016–2017). He continued his playing career at Augustana University in 2018 before competing at Northern State University from 2019–2022.
Alex went on to serve as the Head Baseball Coach at Des Moines North High School from 2023–2024 and led the Watertown Junior Legion program through the 2025 season.
He brings a strong coaching background, college playing experience, and a passion for player development to the Watertown Baseball program.
Nate Russell joined the Watertown Baseball Association coaching staff in 2025, assisting with our 16U program. A lifelong baseball player, Nate began playing at age 7 and has competed at multiple levels, including amateur baseball with the Brookings Cubbies, the White Wildcats, and in the SABL league since 2022.
A graduate of Edgerton High School (MN), Nate brings a strong coaching background to our academy. Prior to his work in Watertown, he coached with SEBA in 2012 and 2013, leading the 13 West team to 3rd- and 2nd-place finishes at the state tournament. In 2014, he continued his coaching career in Brookings, guiding both the Freshman spring team and the 16U B team.
Nate’s experience, leadership, and passion for the game make him a valuable addition to our coaching staff here in Watertown.
Travis Schmidt graduated from Selby High School in Selby, SD, in 2003. During high school, he played two years of Legion baseball in Ipswich, SD, making a 55-mile commute each way from Selby. He was also active in football, basketball, and track. After high school, Travis played one year of college baseball at Northern State University before deciding to complete his degree in four years. He began coaching for the Watertown Baseball Association in 2015 and recently completed his tenth year coaching at various levels. During his time with the association, Travis was part of two state championship teams: the Black Sox in 2017 and Junior Legion in 2018.
